Find a standard with AI: the right standard and clause, without the hallucinations
AI is great at telling you where to look and poor at quoting exact clauses. This guide shows you how to let it identify the right standard, check the edition and status at the official source, and read the actual text only where it is legal. Along the way: why most standards bodies forbid uploading a standard you bought into a chatbot.
01AI is the librarian, not the book
Picture a veteran librarian at the standards institute. Ask "what covers anchoring into concrete?" and you instantly hear "look at EN 1992-4, and check the relevant Israeli standard too". That is gold. Ask them to recite clause 7 from memory, though, and they may mix up editions. AI works the same way: excellent at pointing, but you always read the wording in the book.
02The right flow: from question to clause
- 1Engineering questionDescribe the product, use, country and project
- 2AI suggests candidatesA list of possible standards with source links
- 3Check the official catalogNumber, current edition, and whether it is mandatory
- 4Read a legal copyPurchase, free view of a mandatory standard, or a preview
- 5Checklist from your notesAI helps organise, you own the content
03Free route vs paid route
Free: enough for most "which standard?" questions
- Free ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all include web search with source links
- Perplexity free: practically unlimited basic searches and a small number of advanced ones
- Gemini Deep Research is available on a free Google account (with usage limits)
- The Israeli government search engine for mandatory standards on gov.il, with Excel export
- Free viewing of Israeli official/mandatory standards on the SII viewing site
- ISO OBP lets you read the foreword, introduction, scope, normative references and definitions for free
Limit: The full text of most voluntary standards must be bought, and free AI quotas run out fast on deep research
Paid: deeper research and working with your own documents
About 20 USD a month for a personal plan (Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus, Google AI Pro; check current pricing)
- More Research / Deep Research runs, with dozens of sources per report
- Claude Projects with RAG for a much larger knowledge base (paid plans only)
- NotebookLM with more sources per notebook (Plus: 100, Pro: 300, vs 50 free)
- The standards themselves are bought separately: from SII, ISO, CEN via a national body, or ASTM
When paying is worth it: When you check standards every week, compare countries, or run a large internal procedures library

05Which question, which tool
| What you need | Where to do it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Identify which standard covers a product or job | Perplexity or a chat with web search | You get candidates with links to check |
| Check whether an Israeli standard is mandatory, and which clauses | The mandatory standards search engine on gov.il | Government source, with edition and mandatory clauses |
| Read a mandatory Israeli standard | The SII viewing site | Free viewing of official/mandatory standards |

06How to start, step by step
- 1
Describe the case, do not just ask "which standard?"
Product, material, use, country, project type and client. "Bonded rebar into an existing slab in Israel" beats "anchor standard".
- 2
Turn on web search and ask for sources
"Only give standard numbers that appear in a source you link to. If unsure, say you are unsure."
- 3
Verify each standard in the official catalog
Full number, edition year, whether it is current, and whether it is mandatory in Israel. Anything not in the catalog comes off the list.
- 4
Read the wording from a legal copy
Free view of a mandatory standard, a preview, the SII library, or a purchase. Take the clause number from the document, not the chat.
- 5
Write your own summary
Bullet points, in your own words, with clause numbers you checked. This is the material you may give to the AI.
- 6
Ask the AI for a checklist or table
"Turn my summary into a site inspection checklist, with a column for clause number and a column for sign-off."
- 7
Record the check
Keep the standard number, edition and the date you checked it in the project file.
07Example: an engineer designing an anchorage to concrete
08Example: an importer checking if a standard is mandatory
09Example: a checklist from the office procedures
10Do and don't with standards text
Do
- Ask the AI which standard or part might apply, and ask for links
- Upload your own documents: specs, procedures, summaries in your own words
- Upload public documents you are free to share, like official info pages
- Ask for a checklist, table or concept explanation based on your summary
- Ask the standards body for a digital-use licence if you really need one
Don't
- Upload an ASTM PDF: ASTM policy prohibits entering its standards into AI tools
- Use ISO content to "feed" an AI: ISO terms of use forbid it
- Assume "I bought it, so it is fine": a purchase licence is usually for reading and internal use
- Copy a clause number from the chat straight into a calculation or report
- Use the edition the AI "remembers" instead of the one in force
11Five traps to know
Invented clause numbers
AI can make up a convincing clause, complete with a table and factors. Every clause number is checked against the document.
Outdated editions
Models are trained on past data. Second-generation Eurocodes are being implemented now, with the first generation due to be withdrawn by 30 March 2028.
Copyright
Standards are copyrighted. ISO, ASTM and other bodies explicitly forbid using their content in AI tools. Check your own licence terms.
Mandatory vs voluntary
In Israel an official standard is legally binding, sometimes only some of its clauses. A voluntary standard becomes binding too when a contract, spec or regulation refers to it.
Mixing up countries
An Israeli standard that adopts a European one can include changes or a national annex. AI tends to blend the two.
12FAQ
Can I read an Israeli standard for free?
Official/mandatory standards can be read at no cost on the SII viewing site. The SII Information Center in Tel Aviv also offers free reading of Israeli and international standards, by appointment. Other standards are bought on the SII site.
I bought a standard as a PDF. May I upload it to ChatGPT or Claude?
In most cases no, unless the licence explicitly allows it. ASTM forbids it outright, and ISO terms forbid using its content to prompt AI. Upload a summary you wrote yourself, or ask the standards body for a licence.
How do I know whether an Israeli standard is mandatory?
Check the government search engine for mandatory standards on gov.il, which lists the current edition and the mandatory clauses. Also check the project contract, specification and regulations, since they can make other standards binding.
Which AI tool is most accurate with standard names?
None is error-free. Tools that search the web and show a source for each claim, like Perplexity or a chat with search turned on, err less and let you check quickly. Without web search, do not trust numbers.
Where do I buy a Eurocode?
Through the national standards body that publishes its local version. The Standards Institution of Israel sells international standards and is also the official distributor of BSI standards in Israel.
