AI in WhatsApp in 2026: what really exists, what is free, and what about privacy
Looking for free AI inside WhatsApp, maybe in Hebrew? In October 2026 the picture is different from a year ago: ChatGPT left WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, and so did Copilot according to reports, and in Israel the main AI left inside the app is Meta AI, Meta's own assistant. This guide covers what works in Israel today, what it costs, what Meta says about the privacy of AI chats, how to spot a fake "ChatGPT bot", and why, for real work, the official ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini app is usually the better choice.
01The analogy: the building's concierge instead of outside service desks
Think of WhatsApp as a big office building. Until late 2025 the lobby had desks run by outside providers: ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity. In January 2026 the landlord changed the lease, and in Israel the only desk left is the building's own concierge, Meta AI. It is friendly, free and always there, but it works for the landlord. For serious work or sensitive documents, go to the office of the advisor you chose: their official app.

06Privacy: what Meta says and what you can do
Personal chats stay encrypted
WhatsApp says messages and calls with friends and family stay end-to-end encrypted, and Meta AI only reads what you share with it.
What you send to AI reaches Meta
Meta receives your prompts, the messages you forward to the AI and your feedback. Its privacy site lists interactions with its AI features among training sources.
Incognito chat
A chat with Meta AI that is not stored and disappears when you leave. Use it if you must ask something personal.
Block AI in a specific chat
Advanced Chat Privacy stops a chat's or group's messages from being used for AI features. Useful in work and project groups.
Deleting
You can delete the Meta AI chat, and WhatsApp's Help Center says you can also request deletion of information you previously shared with Meta AI. Deleting the chat alone does not necessarily delete what Meta already received.
No off switch
Meta calls Meta AI an optional service, but we found no official setting that removes it. The simple rule: do not send it sensitive information.
07Warning: fake "AI bots" on WhatsApp

There is no official ChatGPT in WhatsApp in Israel today. A contact claiming to be one is at best a third-party service, and sometimes a scam.
A request for payment or "premium"
Subscriptions to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini are bought on the official website or in the official app, not through a link a WhatsApp contact sent you.
Verification code or password
No legitimate bot needs your WhatsApp verification code. Anyone asking for it is trying to take over your account.
A link to download an "AI app"
Install only from the App Store or Google Play, from the official developer (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft).
"AI investment" groups
Promises of profit from a "smart trading bot" are a known scam pattern. Do not send money or install anything.

Is ChatGPT on WhatsApp in 2026?
Not in Israel. OpenAI said 1-800-ChatGPT would not be available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026 because of a WhatsApp policy change. On 9 June 2026 the European Commission ordered Meta to restore access for general-purpose AI assistants in the EEA, and OpenAI's Help Center says the service is available again only there, based on your number's country code (reports date it to 13 July 2026). In Israel, use the official app.
Is there free AI in WhatsApp?
Yes, Meta AI is free inside WhatsApp, if it is already enabled on your device. The official ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot apps are also free in their basic versions.
Does Meta AI speak Hebrew?
According to reports from 30 June 2026 (Ynet, ice), Meta AI launched in Israel with Hebrew, inside WhatsApp and on meta.ai. What about the privacy of chats with Meta AI?
Messages you send to Meta AI reach Meta, and Meta says interactions with its AI features are used to develop its AI. Your normal chats with people stay encrypted. For sensitive questions use Incognito chat, and in groups turn on Advanced Chat Privacy.
How do I delete my chats with Meta AI?
Delete the chat like any WhatsApp chat; that clears your phone. WhatsApp's Help Center says you can also request deletion of information you previously shared with Meta AI; for other requests about your data, use Meta's Privacy Center.
Someone sent me a "ChatGPT bot" on WhatsApp. Should I use it?
No. General AI bots are not permitted on WhatsApp in Israel today, so it is not the official ChatGPT. Do not send it personal information, a verification code or money.
