AI for interior design and architects: what works free and what is worth paying for

Snap your living room and get three design options in minutes. An architect turns a sketch into a client render, or describes a room and gets a real SketchUp model. This guide covers the best tools, what you get for free, and what must still be checked by a licensed professional.

01The analogy: a fast sketch artist without a tape measure

Design AI is like a talented sketch artist who draws incredibly fast: in a minute it shows you the living room as Scandinavian, industrial or Mediterranean. But it never measured the room, does not know where the column runs, and has no idea what the code allows. It gives you a direction and a feeling, not a plan you can build.

02Two routes: free or paid

Free

The free route

  • Gemini: upload a photo of the room and ask to swap furniture, colors or lighting (Nano Banana 2), with a visible watermark
  • ChatGPT Images: edit a photo you uploaded, including selecting one area and changing only that, within a limited allowance
  • Claude with the SketchUp connector: describe a room with dimensions and get a .skp file, up to 30 models for free SketchUp users
  • Adobe Firefly: a number of free generations per day
  • Canva Free: up to 20 AI tool uses, plus layout for a mood board or client deck

Limit: Small allowances, watermarks, and SketchUp Free is not for commercial use and has no AI Render

04How it works: from a room photo to three options

  1. 1PhotoA wide, bright shot of the room from a corner
  2. 2BriefWhat stays, what changes, style and budget
  3. 33 versionsSame room, three different styles
  4. 4RefineOne change per request until you are happy
  5. 5CheckDimensions, electrics and structure with a professional

05Step by step: from a room photo to three design options

  1. 1

    Take the right photo

A landscape shot from a corner, in daylight, with no people. Take two angles if needed.

  2. 2

    Upload to Gemini or ChatGPT

Both work for free. Upload the photo in a new chat.

  3. 3

    Say what must not change

"Keep the windows, door, flooring and kitchen position. Do not move any walls."

  4. 4

    Ask for three versions

"Suggest 3 designs: light Scandinavian, warm Mediterranean, dark modern. Same camera angle."

  5. 5

    Refine one

Pick a version and ask for one change at a time: "Same, but with a sand-colored sofa."

  6. 6

Put it on a mood board

The three images, material samples and colors in Canva, with your own captions.

  7. 7

    Check before you buy

Measure yourself. Furniture in a render does not necessarily fit the real room.

07Example for an architect: from sketch to model and render

Architect in a small officeasks
"Create a SketchUp model in meters: a single-story house 12 by 9 meters, 3 meters high, flat roof, a ribbon window along the south facade and a 4-meter pergola. Group each element as a separate component." Then she uploaded a screenshot of the model to ChatGPT: "Turn this into a sunset render, white plaster and timber, without changing the volumes."
gets
A .skp file with tidy components that she opened in SketchUp and refined herself, plus three mood images for the first meeting. Each image was labeled "illustrative render only".
ToolClaude with the SketchUp connector, ChatGPT Images

08Example for a homeowner: a new living room before buying anything

Homeowner before a renovationasks
Uploaded a photo of the living room to Gemini: "Keep the walls, windows and flooring. Suggest 3 designs: Scandinavian, Mediterranean and modern. A different sofa color in each, with warm lighting."
gets
Three images of the same living room that helped him and his partner choose a direction. Then he measured the room and checked the sizes of real furniture before ordering.
ToolGemini (free), Canva for the mood board

09Example for an interior designer: mood board and client deck

Freelance interior designerasks
"Here are 6 images the client liked and a photo of her current kitchen. Sum up the style in 5 words, suggest a color and material palette, and build a mood board and a 6-slide deck in Canva with Hebrew titles."
gets
A style description the client recognized at once, plus a mood board and a deck the designer edited in Canva before the meeting.

10Honest limits: what AI gives you and what it does not

AI is good for

  • Ideas, styles and atmosphere in minutes
  • Quickly comparing several design directions
  • Mood boards and client presentations
  • A first SketchUp model from a description with dimensions
  • Explaining and summarizing a client's preferences

AI does not replace

  • Working drawings or permit drawings: an AI image is not a buildable plan
  • Dimensions: in an image they are invented, even when they look convincing
  • A structural engineer's check before removing or opening any wall, even if the render already shows it gone
  • A licensed professional's check of standards, planning and building law and accessibility
  • Electrics, plumbing and HVAC: licensed trades only

11Rights, privacy and pitfalls

Rights

Image rights

Each tool has its own terms for commercial use. An image made entirely by AI is not always protected by copyright. For important publications, check the terms.

Privacy

Client photos

A photo of a client's home is private. Do not upload it to a free tool without consent, and remove people and documents from the frame.

Transparency

Do not present it as a real photo

Label every image as a render. Gemini adds a watermark and Adobe attaches Content Credentials. Do not remove them.

Hebrew

Hebrew text inside the image

Hebrew letters inside an AI image often come out garbled. Ask for an image without text and add captions in Canva.

Licensing

SketchUp Free

Not for commercial use. An office delivering work to a client needs a paid subscription.

12FAQ

Is there a free AI interior design app?

Yes. Gemini and ChatGPT edit a photo of your room for free, within a limited allowance. Gemini adds a visible watermark. For a mood board, Canva Free gives up to 20 AI tool uses.

How do I use AI to design a room?

Photograph the room, upload it to Gemini or ChatGPT, say what must not change and ask for three versions in different styles. Then refine one version with one change at a time. See the steps above and the guide at Images with AI.

Can AI draw a floor plan for my home?

Not a buildable one. An AI image can look like a plan, but its dimensions are invented. Claude with the SketchUp connector builds a model at the dimensions you give, which is a good starting point. Working or permit drawings are prepared by a licensed architect or engineer in professional software.

What is the SketchUp connector for Claude?

An official Trimble connector. You describe a model in words and Claude creates a .skp file with a preview and a download link. It does not render or edit an existing file, and models are not kept between chats. Add it under Customize, then Connectors. More recommended connectors: The best AI plug-in for each kind of work.

What are the best AI tools for architects?

For ideas and quick renders: Gemini and ChatGPT. For a model from a description: Claude with SketchUp. For a render from an existing model: SketchUp AI Render or Veras. For presentations: Canva. Any structural calculation or code check must be reviewed by a qualified engineer.

Can I write to these tools in Hebrew?

In Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude you can hold the chat in Hebrew. In SketchUp AI Render it is better to write in English, because Trimble says the tool was trained in English. Add Hebrew text inside the image afterwards in Canva.
