ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Copilot: which AI to choose for work in 2026

ChatGPT or Gemini? Claude or ChatGPT? Or Copilot? Here is a clear answer by task and by type of work: what you get free and what you pay for, the honest weak points of each, and a 30-minute test you can run yourself with the same prompt.

15 min read

01The short answer: no single AI wins at everything

ChatGPT is the most versatile: writing, files, images, voice and an agent that produces finished documents. Claude is especially strong at writing, long documents and Excel sheets with real formulas. Gemini offers one of the richest free packages and fits right into Gmail and Docs. Copilot is mainly worth it if you already pay for Microsoft 365, because it works inside Word, Excel and Outlook.

The choice depends less on which one is smartest and more on three questions: which system your office runs on (Microsoft or Google), what your main task is (writing, Excel, images, code), and how much you want to pay. All four have a free version, and a full personal plan costs about 20 USD a month.

Prices and features were checked in October 2026 on the official pages, at US prices excluding tax. The full comparison of every plan is at AI Price Comparison: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot.

  • You want sheets with formulas you can check, or work inside Excel and Word (Claude for Excel and Word)

  • You want a large choice of plugins for services you already use
  • You want to build a simple website (ChatGPT Sites on Plus, in beta)

05Gemini or ChatGPT?

Choose Gemini if…

  • Your office runs on Gmail, Google Drive and Docs
  • You want the most for free: Deep Research, Canvas, images and Gemini Notebook
  • A Hebrew interface matters to you or your staff
  • You need short video clips (from Google AI Plus)
  • You want a cheap plan: Google AI Plus at 4.99 USD, with family sharing

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • Your office runs on Microsoft Office: ChatGPT has add-ins for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with limited free use

  • You want an agent that carries a long task from start to finish (ChatGPT Work, mainly on paid plans)

  • You want deep research without moving up to Microsoft 365 Premium

07Which AI to choose for your kind of work

Claude + ChatGPT

Engineer

Claude Pro for reports, long documents and sheets with formulas, plus free ChatGPT for quick questions. Every calculation is checked against the standard, in dedicated software and by a qualified engineer. More at AI for civil engineering.

ChatGPT or Gemini

Architect

ChatGPT or Gemini for concept renders and mood boards, Claude for writing specifications and project descriptions. A render is not a measured drawing. More at Architecture and interiors.

Gemini

Student

Free Gemini: Hebrew interface, Deep Research and Gemini Notebook to summarise course material. Note that Google's free year of Google AI Pro is currently for US college students only, so do not count on it in Israel. More at Google's AI notebook.

Business plan

Small office

One paid plan for the person who uses AI most, the rest of the team on free. When you upload client documents, prefer a business plan: Claude Team or ChatGPT Business, from 20 USD per user billed yearly. More at AI for small business.

Copilot

Microsoft 365 office

Copilot. Copilot Chat is included in the business plans, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Business adds work on your company's mail and files (18 USD per user billed yearly). Claude for Excel is a good second opinion.

Gemini

Google Workspace office

Gemini. Workspace Business Standard gives Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive and Meet with business-grade privacy. Business Starter has Gemini only in Gmail and Vids.

08The honest weak points of each

Weak points

Claude

No image or video generation, and the interface is English only. On free, usage runs out fast and there is no Research. Even paid plans have a 5-hour limit and a weekly limit.

Weak points

ChatGPT

Free allows only 3 file uploads a day, and ads may appear. No video generation since Sora was discontinued. Custom GPTs stop working on 11 December 2026, and Plus has no yearly discount.

Weak points

Gemini

Free has a short context window (32k tokens), so long documents get cut. Images carry a visible watermark. Some features reach the US first, and names and features change fast (Gems are becoming skills).

Weak points

Copilot

The free version is weak for work: no Copilot inside Office and no Deep Research. Microsoft publishes no usage limits. Memory is not available in Israel, there is no Hebrew voice chat, and on Family and Premium only the owner gets the AI.

09Test them yourself in 30 minutes, with the same prompt

  1. 1

Open four free accounts (5 minutes)

    claude.ai, chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Do not pay yet.

  2. 2

Switch off training on your data

Claude: Settings, then Privacy. ChatGPT: Settings, then Data controls. Gemini: Gemini Apps Activity. Copilot: according to Microsoft, chats from users in Israel are not used for training anyway. Or simply use a temporary chat.

  3. 3

Pick a real task and a non-sensitive file (5 minutes)

For example a 10 to 20 page technical specification or a small Excel sheet. Exactly the same file for all four.

  4. 4

Paste the same prompt into each (10 minutes)

For example: "Summarise the document in 10 bullet points, then give a table of every numeric requirement with its page number. Mark anything you could not find."

  5. 5

Check against the source (5 minutes)

Open the file and check 3 numbers from each answer. Score 1 to 5 for accuracy, language, format and following instructions.

  6. 6

Ask for one correction (5 minutes)

"Turn the table into an Excel file" or "Cut it to half a page in a formal tone". This shows who works well in the second round too.

  7. 7

Pay for one month, for the winner only

If free is not enough, try one month and cancel if you did not save real time. Add-ons that improve each tool are collected at The best AI plug-in for each kind of work.

10Example: a load sheet in a Microsoft 365 office

Structural engineerasks
"Here is the project load sheet. Add a utilisation ratio column, mark in red every row above 1.0, and explain in words each formula you added."
gets
A sheet with visible formulas she can check cell by cell, not numbers from the model's head. She compares a few rows with a hand calculation and her dedicated software before they go into the report, and checks anchor calculations in ADIT's free calculators.
ToolCopilot in Excel (Microsoft 365 Personal and up) or Claude for Excel (Claude Pro)

11Example: a small architecture office on Google Workspace

Architect, partner in a four-person officeasks
In Google Docs: "Write a draft project description for the planning committee from the meeting notes in this file, in formal Hebrew, one page maximum." Then in the Gemini app: "Create 3 concept renders of a Mediterranean-style facade in morning light."
gets
A draft inside the document he can edit right away, and inspiration images for the client meeting. The images are ideas only, not measured drawings, and Hebrew captions are added afterwards in Docs or Slides.
ToolGemini in Docs (Workspace Business Standard) and the Gemini app

12FAQ

Which is better, ChatGPT or Gemini?

If you work in Google and want the most for free: Gemini. If you want one flexible tool for every task, with Office add-ins and an agent that produces finished files: ChatGPT. A full plan costs about 20 USD a month on both (Google AI Pro at 19.99, ChatGPT Plus at 20). Details at Gemini guide and AI assistant guide.

Claude or ChatGPT: which is better for work?

For writing, long documents and Excel with formulas: Claude. For images, voice and a wide range of plugins: ChatGPT. Many professionals combine them: one paid, one free. The full guide is at Claude for the office.

Copilot or ChatGPT?

If you already have Microsoft 365, start with Copilot inside Word and Excel, since it is already in your subscription. Without Office, free Copilot is weaker for work: no Deep Research and no memory in Israel. Details at Copilot guide.

Which AI is best in Hebrew?

All four read and write Hebrew. Gemini has a Hebrew interface, and Copilot officially supports Hebrew for writing. Claude and ChatGPT answer in Hebrew, but their interfaces are in English. With all of them, check technical terms, numbers and units in right-to-left text. We found no official commitment to good Hebrew speech recognition from any of them.

Is there a good AI that is completely free?

Yes. Gemini with Deep Research and images, ChatGPT with near-unlimited text chats, Claude with file creation and long PDF reading, and Copilot with chat and images. The limits are in usage caps and advanced features. The full list is at Free AI tools.

Should I pay for more than one?

Usually not. One subscription at about 20 USD a month, plus one or two tools on free, covers almost any office. Add a second subscription only when there is a regular task the first tool cannot do, such as video or working inside Office.
